On 14th August 2018, in celebration of Women’s Month, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) celebrated its annual Provincial Female Entrepreneur Awards with two of the Trust’s agricultural cooperatives walking away with gold and silver awards.

Magema Agricultural Cooperative, situated in UMkhanyakude, won the coveted “Top Entrepreneur in the Sector: Small holder” award and a cash price of R120 000.

Qalekhaya agricultural cooperative, situated in Ezindophi in the Eshowe area, secured the silver award and a cash price of R20 000 for “Top Entrepreneur Smallholder”.

“The awards programme is an initiative by the National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and fisheries (DAFF), to honour the efforts and contribution of women, young females and women with disabilities for the role they play in food security, poverty alleviation, job creation and economic growth. The programme aims to acknowledge, encourage and increase the participation of women in agriculture by ensuring they graduate from operating at the subsistence level to small-holder, commercial and even export level” DARD, 2018.

We are extremely proud and congratulate the members of both, Magema and Qalekhaya cooperatives. We also extend our congratulations to our field facilitators, Jabu Nxumalo and Nomcebo Zaca, for their hard work and dedication in leading these groups to greatness.
