As an NGO that works directly with smallholder farmers in communities, the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown regulations has had an effect on how we operate and interact with farmers, suppliers and buyers. Planning around logistics planning has had to include the handling of goods (from farmers to staff to market) and protocols and procedures put in place around the delivery and collection of inputs.
In one day, Siyazisiza’s field team was able to deliver seedlings to 21 projects (just over 30% of beneficiaries) in Kwazulu Natal. With more operational support, Siyazisiza can increase its direct impact over 1 000 smallholder farmers and especially reach more communities and households to promote food security and the importance of #FoodIntheGround.

Food in the Ground is a programme of the Siyazisiza Trust, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, designed to better prepare marginal rural communities for current and future impacts and for post-crisis recovery. A core component of the initiative is renewing focus on food security amongst community farmers; and the continued generation of income and access to supply chains by smallholder farmers.
